Three high school teachers, Ed, Doris and Carl, drive through the Antelope Valley in California on their way to a Dodgers game in Los Angeles. The group's Chevrolet Bel Air has mechanical problems and they are forced to stop at a gas station at the roadside. After examining the vehicle Ed checks that the fuel pump is broken. Doris and Carl search in the enclosure looking for the owner, but they do not find it. In the cabin, Carl finds hot food on the table, but curiously no one is at home. All three realize that the situation is very rare and begin to worry seriously. At that time Charlie Tibbs, a man with a Colt 45, and his girlfriend Judy appear. Charlie and Judy have spent the last few days in western Arizona, leaving a trail of corpses in their wake. The police chase after them, but Charlie has managed to stay one step ahead by changing cars frequently and then killing the people who offer him their help. Charlie forces Ed to repair the car and informs him that Judy and he will take it back when Ed finishes fixing it. For the next few hours Charlie and his girlfriend will torment Ed, Doris and Carl.
