An inmate, still serving his sentence, makes music boxes to redeem punishment. Three of these boxes are auctioned and several people are interested in its purchase. But none of the buyers knows that the prisoner, who was part of a band of thieves, had inserted in the melodies of the boxes the location where the plates were hidden to make the five-pound banknote bank of England. The murder of one of the buyers alerts the police and Sherlock Homes, who with his friend Watson begins an investigation and discovers that, thanks to the help of a friendly inn musician, the box kept by the police has part of the code. This will be completed with the other two boxes stolen by a gang of thugs, which includes Mrs. Courtney and Colonel Cabanna. Fortunately, thanks to the intelligent intervention of Holmes and Watson, plates are recovered for the Bank of England.
