David McLean is Tate, who lost the use of his left arm during the American Civil War. Because he was injured at the Battle of Vicksburg in Mississippi, Tate's arm is covered in black leather and a glove and supported by a sling. Tate is a widower, but the cause of the death of his wife, Mary, is not specified in the series, although a gunfight seems likely. Tate roams the Old West as a bounty hunter-gunfighter and he was discriminating as to whom he worked for and would change sides if he found himself misled by his employers. As a gunman, he is wickedly fast on the draw. He also carries a shotgun. His reputation precedes him, and other men often seek him out in a gunfight...often to their regret. The fact that Tate is physically disabled made him the first handicapped lead character in television history and paved the way for future programs like Ironside with Raymond Burr and Longstreet, starring James Franciscus.

Tate is riding along when he is shot at by someone running along a ridge with a rifle. Tate jumps of horse seeking cover and shooting back. The ambusher is hit, tumbles down the hill dead and is found to be a woman by Tate. He puts her over her horse and rides to town. Townfolk trickle out to see that it is Ginny (Patty Desautels). They threaten that Frank Turner. Ginny's husband, will come to see to Ginny's burial and imply that he will kill Tate. Tate gets room #3 at the hotel and is warned by clerk (Bill Mims) to clear out. Turns out Tate has been after Frank Turner for a long time. Tate goes to his room, pulls a ragged doll out of his saddle bag and sets it on the chest of drawers. Someone throws a rock through his window, he looks out but only sees the crowd of townfolk. The clerk comes to the room with towel and advises where to eat and who might be lurking for him. Tate goes to the saloon full of people staring at him. Ragan (Paul Richards) comes to Tate's table figuring out he is Tate looking for Frank Turner and makes a plea to leave Frank alone. Tate orders food but is served "dish water" and is threatened by someone who Tate punches up a bit. As Tate is leaving he asks if anyone wants to know why he is searching for Turner but they are all pretty loyal to Frank and don't care. Tate gets food back at hotel from hotel clerk and finds his way to the church to see the minister. He opens the church door to find Melany (Wendy Winkelman) playing the organ. He shows her how to overcome some rough spots in her organ playing and corrects her grammar and they seem to quickly bond. He finds out that Melany is Ginny's sister and he leaves. He finds out that Frank is now back and at the hotel. He enters the hotel and Ragan follows him in trying to convince Tate to leave town. We find that Frank, while on the Confederate side during the war 6 years ago, set fire to a house where a little girl died and her paralyzed father is paying for Tate to get Frank. Ragan has a showdown with Tate and winds up dead. Tates goes up the stairs to his own room where Frank is waiting for him. The previously mentioned doll is bandied about a bit and one can see that Frank is feeling guilty. Next scene Tate and Frank are saddling up to head out when the hotel clerk advises someone is inside hotel to see him. It is Melany and she seems to be taking the fact that Tate killed her sister pretty well. She forgives him, they say their goodbyes, and Tate goes outside to saddle up and slowly ride out of town with Frank.

Clay Barton (Ronald Nicholas) is riding along, stops his horse when he sees Carmela (Marianna Hill) swishing her feet around in a large puddle in the road. He tries to flirt with her but her father Arriaga (Gregory Morton) appears and starts beating him with a large stick which Clay then gains control over and beats Arriaga into unconsciousness. Clay then grabs Carmela giving her a forceful kiss and then, it appears through innuendo later, that he raped her, but she is Mexican and not too many people are interested in justice for her. The scene shifts to Arriaga chasing Clay's father John (Ted de Corsia) out of a saloon and threatening him with a rifle. Tate appears and steps in between them. He disarms Arriaga with a kick and we find out Arriaga has hired Tate to avenge his pride. But Arriaga is irritated when he finds out that Tate won't just kill Clay. Tate wants to give Arriaga what he paid for and the next day rides into town. The town Marshall (Jack Orrison) tells him to leave and six other men threaten him to do the same. Tate is determined to bring Clay to the County Seat and justice. Clay is holed up in the saloon with father and a number of men protecting him. An oddly played preacher (Kelton Garwood) shows up in the saloon for a bit of banter. In a ruse, Tate forces a man at the saloon's entryway to call for Clay to come outside. Clay does and Tate forces him into a nearby barn while Clay's protectors wait outside. Soon, the barn door opens and a horse-drawn wagon with Clay holding the reins and Tate standing with a rifle to Clay's head comes rolling out. Not wanting to risk Clay's life the townsmen let the wagon pass. The trip to the County Seat is 2 days and the townsmen follow. Tate decides to head to Arriaga's place instead as it is closer and more manageable for him. Tate tells a happily waiting Arriaga that Tate is still going to take him to the County Seat but will do so at night with horses from Arriaga. Arriaga argues at first but then agrees. Clay now sees Carmela again and she verbally chastises him. Meanwhile the townsmen have followed and they are outside. Clay with Tate goes outside and tells his father that he is going with Tate to face his fate. Arriaga thinks that instead Tate is giving Clay back to the townsmen. Arriaga grabs a rifle and runs out on the porch yelling, "I am Manuel Arriaga, a man" firing his rifle but Arriaga is shot and killed. The show finishes with a small funeral for Arriaga. The preacher shows up again and says a few words for a bit of money but says he will give the deluxe eulogy for more money. Tate declines and says that the only thing left to say is what Arriaga said earlier, "Manuel Arriaga, a man." Tate and Clay ride off to meet Clay's fate

Amos Dundee (Frank Overton) has been searching for the killer, William Essey (Bradford Lane), of his then 18 year old brother for the past two years. The 18 year old brother had called Essey a cheat during a card game and Essey "belly-shot" him causing a long drawn out death. Tate found Essey and has apparently contacted Amos to meet him in the town where Essey is at a saloon. They go to the saloon and, in a gun draw, Amos shoots and kills Essey. Now Amos can go back to his ranch where his other younger brother Tad (Robert Redford) has been. Before he goes though, Amos picks up a general delivery letter from the girl he wants to marry, Lucy (Anne Whitfield), and finds out Lucy now wants to marry Tad. So now Amos wants to kill Tad for stealing his girl. Tate tags along back to the ranch and on the way they run into some renegade-killed-a-bunch-of-farmers Comanches (Leonard Nimoy is the chief ) who try and shake them down for their guns. Tate gives them some tobacco but that is all and the foiled Chief threatens to kill them when he can sometime in the future. Tate splits off to report the massacred farmers but still beats Amos to Amos' Ranch. Tad and Lucy have already married but Amos is still out for blood. Tate and Lucy try to convince Amos otherwise but Amos calls Tad out. Tad won't fight but doesn't back down either. While Amos is horsewhipping Tad the Comanches show up again and shoot some arrows into Amos and Tate just as Tate had redirected Amos' anger toward himself. Amos now lays dead, Tate wounded and Tad has picked up a gun to kill an Indian while the Chief rides away with Lucy. Tad goes after and next scene he is back with Lucy asking Tate where Tate buried Amos. Tad goes to the gravesite, opens his saddlebag and pulls out a Comanche scalp to put on a stick by the grave. He explains to an onlooking Tate, "They took his life away from me, I took their lives away from them." Tate gives a few slight nods in apparent understanding and approval and the show ends with both walking away from grave.
